Blue Friday. Goodbye to Another Summer Intern: Hannah Atlanta

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Who needs Hannah Montana when you have Hannah Atlanta? (That’s her above, hanging out at Oscar Wilde’s gravesite in Paris, wearing a raspberry beret.) Hannah has been a constantly cheery and competent presence in the product room (we call it the beauty closet), handling requests from magazines such as Vogue and Bazaar and putting together VIP packages for different celebs and muas. (She’s working on Khloe’s right now! Don’t forget the Hypnose Drama, Hannah!)

Hannah came here with certain, ahem, assumptions about Lancome, but fortunately, two months hanging out with us has opened her eyes. Here is Hannah’s exit interview:

What did you think of Lancome when you got here?
“I thought it was a makeup line for older women. I always associated it with really nice skincare and powdery, floral perfumes. Older.” [I won't take it personally that Hannah said older. Twice.]

What do you think of Lancome today?

I think it’s a great makeup line with awesome color stories and there’s a lot going on. Anybody can use the products. I didn’t really realize it. Lancome is for young girls too. Oh, and your lip products are awesome. All of them.
Fave products?
Juicy Tubes Pure. Oscillation mascara. Micellular cleansing water. And…what else do I like? Oh, Le Lipstique. It’s my first experience with lip liner and I’m a fan. Oh, and Artliner.
What will you miss?
The people. And being around that much makeup all day long. Also, the Lancome events are always really fun.
What do you want to do when you graduate from college?
Start my own makeup line.
What’s better than being a Lancome intern?
Being the vice president of PR at Lancome? Just kidding. Nothing! There’s nothing better.

Hannah’s the best. Smart, funny and she knows how to butter up the boss! Well, we’ll seriously miss Hannah. And I think Bobbi Brown had better watch out! Hannah might be a force to reckon with one of these days. Hannah, from all of us at Lancome, thanks for working so hard. Have a great school year.

P.S. And to our dear, sweet Louise, who left yesterday…we’ll have to do your exit interview by email! Check your inbox.

P.S.S. Thanks to Khloe Kardashian for the great shoutout on her blog. We’re honored!

P.S.S.S. Have a great weekend and check out our friends-and-family sale at our five boutiques. Nice excuse to stock up on some old faves and new must-haves, especially if you’re watching your wallet.

Are the Kardashian Girls the Best Thing to Happen to Makeup Since JLo?

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Our pal Daneen over at the delightful Spoiled Pretty blog kindly informed us that Khloe Kardashian is a big fan of our Hypnose mascara. (Check out Daneen’s fun video interview with Khloe and her makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic above.) Lots of celebs like our products, but I was particularly happy to hear about this because the Kardashian girls are a big influence in the makeup world today.

Sandy Linter told me a few months ago that all of her young clients were asking to look like Kim Kardashian. When a celeb really loves wearing makeup and wears it well, it can change what’s popular in the beauty biz. Just look at Jennifer Lopez. When she was out and about all those time a few years back, wearing that amazingly glowy makeup by the brilliant makeup artist Scott Barnes, it made everyone who cares about stuff like this rethink foundation, powder, blush and highlighting products. (I really wish Jennifer and Scott would write a beauty book. Don’t you?)

Maybe the Kardashian sisters are going to do the same thing for eye makeup. They clearly delight in wearing makeup, which is fun. Unlike the supermodels and celebrities who walk around barefaced–and brag about it. Which is so boring. Right?
Speaking of Hypnose, we just launched a new addition to the Hypnose mascara family. It’s called Hypnose Drama and it’s got this cool curvy brush that makes your lashes insanely long. It’s available exclusively at Sephora.com. The first batch already sold out, but they just restocked. We’ll be sending some to Khloe asap!

Getting Ready for Fashion Week–And a Pout-à-Porter Giveaway!!

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

It’s still July, but we’re already thinking about Spring 2010 Fashion Week, which happens in September. We’re doing the makeup for the L’Wren Scott show, with Aaron De Mey leading the makeup team, and for Chris Benz, with Daniel Martin in the lead. We’re really honored to work with these two designers. They are so different and amazing in their own right, but they do have something in common. They are very organized, very focused and know what they want when it comes to hair and makeup.
Aaron already has talked to L’Wren about the beauty look and we just sent some nail polish samples to L’Wren’s team yesterday. As for Chris, most of you know we’re hard at work on the lipstick for his show, which will be the fifth in the Pout-à-Porter series. You also know we asked everyone to help name the lipstick by leaving a submission on Chris’s Facebook fan page. (Poor Emili the intern is counting all the submissions right now.) Chris picked the winning name, which will be announced at the show.
All the Pout-à-Porter lipsticks have sold out, so if you have any of them, consider yourself lucky! I don’t even have a Proenza Pink, which makes me a little sad. They sold out so quickly and there was such a frenzy around them, I just didn’t act fast enough. Blogdorf Goodman and Miss Whoever You Are have blogged about Thakoon Pixel Pink and losing or not getting their hands on that shade. I did squirrel away some Pixel Pink last year, which I promptly forgot about. But I was going through our giant file cabinets the other day and happened upon my stash. So let’s give some away. Post the name of your favorite fashion designer and we’ll pick five of you at random. Each of you will get a Pixel Pink, which is one of the best sheer summer lipstick shades ever. (Gorg model Julia Dunstall’s wearing it above. Does anyone know what agency Julia is with?)

P.S. Be sure to read the blog around Fashion Week. We’re putting together some fun giveaways and we might even give one lucky person the Chris Benz lipstick, which won’t hit stores until January!

“One of the Most Beautiful Palettes I’ve Ever Seen.” Aww, Thanks Jessie!

Monday, July 27th, 2009

While tons of people watch YouTube at work while they’re supposed to be doing something else, I kind of get paid to watch YouTube. (Note to Le Boss: I don’t spend my entire day watching. I swear.) So I was really excited to come across a Declaring Indigo “Indigo Charm” shadow how-to on YouTube. It’s by a makeup artist named Jessie and she’s really got a way with eye makeup. You’ll definitely pick up a few tips from her. I love the angled brush she used for the pot liner. (Our new gel Ink Artliner is very similar to the pot liner she used.) I also loved how she put the gold eyeshadow on the outside and how she smudged the liner from the lower waterline into the lashline.

Jessie also has a blog. She needs some followers, so check out her blog and give her some love.

Hope everyone had a nice weekend!

Are You A Contest Winner? Plus, Our Pick for the Blogger Swatch Queen–KarlaSugar!!

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Some business to take care of today: contest winners!!

–Kathemc won the Gwen Stefani/Elle magazine cover makeup. Great suggestion about Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart in their Runaways look for an upcoming Elle cover.
–BeautyChick101 of The Beauty of Life blog (one of our faves!) won the chat with celeb mua Andrew Sotomayor, which also includes a selection of Lancome products that Andrew will choose for her. Lucky girl!
–TT won the red, white and blue makeup from the Fourth of July giveaway. TT had to work on the Fourth so it’s only fair that she wins. (Although we did pick her name at random!)
–Cadence won the signed copy of Jen Weiner’s “Best Friends Forever,” which just hit #1 on The New York Times best-seller list. Way to go, Jen. Cadence, we don’t have an email address for you, so please get in touch with us.

Thanks to everyone who voted in the Chris Benz lipstick naming contest. We have a winner! We will announce your name at Chris’s show in September. And no surprise here, it’s a super cute name.

We hung out with the superbloggers from the Beauty Bloggerati yesterday and today. We know so many of the bloggers by their blog names (”Did you talk to Beauty Blogging Junkie today?”) so it was really nice to put names to faces.

Lastly, I was going through some Declaring Indigo posts and I came upon KarlaSugar’s. Karla is clearly one of the best bloggers when it comes to makeup swatches. If you’re curious about what the Declaring Indigo colors look like on light skin tones, check out this post.

Anyone else doing a great job with makeup swatches? Let us know. We’d love to see! Have a great weekend.

The Cat’s Meow: Michelle’s Leopard Eye Video

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

If you follow the Lancome Blog, you know we’re big Michelle Phan fans around here. For those of you who don’t know Michelle, she’s a fantastic young video makeup artist with a big following on YouTube. We had the pleasure of seeing Michelle last week and learning more about what inspires her, what products she loves and how she makes her videos. We were excited to see that she recently posted a few videos featuring Oscillation vibrating mascara. The video above is definitely advanced makeup artistry, but I thought you would enjoy seeing Michelle in action. You’ll definitely pick up some tips, even if you never plan to wear leopard eyes.

If you love this video, definitely check out Michelle’s YouTube channel for more inspiring makeup videos.

Sneak Peek: Arlenis And Alex Sanchez On Video. You Can Win Alex’s Blush Must-Haves!!

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

A few months ago, we shot a series of how-to videos with our gorgeous spokesmodel Arlenis Sosa and makeup artist Alex Sanchez. We’ll be debuting these videos on lancome-usa.com very soon, but we’ll give you a sneak peek here on the blog. (Truth be told, the quality is better on YouTube! Our editor/director might be happier if you jump over there to watch it on a bigger screen. We quietly set up a Lancome Studio channel recently that we’ll be adding to and improving upon over the next few weeks.)

Leave a post telling us what you think about the video and what how-to videos you’d like to see in the future. We’ll pick one post at random to win the blushes and brushes that Alex uses in the video. (Alex will pick colors specifically for the winner.) Please post by Sunday.

The Lancome List: Things To Read, Watch and Do!

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Hi, everyone. Lots of miscellaneous things I’ve been meaning to share with you, so here it goes:
–YouTube star Michelle Phan has a new video with Oscillation mascara and a beauty tip you’ve probably never heard of.
–The folks at the Beauty411 blog were kind enough to do a Beauty Bylines interview with me. Say nice things if you leave a comment. :)
–I’ve added Miss Whoever You Are to my list of must-read blogs. I love beauty blogs with a personality and this fits the bill. Plus, Miss Whoever loves Thakoon’s Pixel Pink as much as we do!
–The New York Times fragrance critic Chandler Burr has written his first fiction book! It’s called “You or Someone Like You.” This isn’t a beach read, but rather a serious story about identity. (Of course, you can still read it at the beach.) If you’re a fragrance nerd, you should definitely read his book “The Perfect Scent.” Chandler spent an entire year following both Sarah Jessica Parker and the in-house perfumeur from Hermes as they worked on different fragrance projects.
Declaring Indigo has hit lancome-usa.com! If you buy one thing from the collection, it should be the Indigo Paris nail polish. Polish, I promise you, is the key beauty trend this fall. More to come on that subject at a later date.
–Daria Werbowy is on the cover of French Vogue! Again! Isn’t the makeup great? We’ll do a post on how to get the look once we buy the new issue.
–Check out the August issue of O Magazine for a makeover story by Jenny Bailly with makeup by our very own Sandy Linter. Sometimes makeover stories can be boring or worse, unbelievable. So it’s nice to see one that’s really amazing.
–Speaking of Sandy, Aaron De Mey interviewed her for the “Hero” feature in the new V Magazine. It’s the one with the fab Cameron Diaz photo on the cover. It’s one of the best interviews I’ve ever read with Sandy, so be sure to check it out.
If you have something you’d like everyone to check out, let us know!

Courtesy of Allure, The Pink Eyeshadow Debut! Which Side Are You On?

Monday, July 20th, 2009

I couldn’t help put notice the delightful Amy Adams wearing pink eyeshadow on the cover of the new issue of Allure. That’s a brave choice! Especially on a redhead. I’m sure there are tons of old beauty books and magazine articles out there telling redheads to steer clear of pink eyeshadow. Lancome did pink this spring with our Pink Irreverence collection by Aaron De Mey and it was well received, probably because we paired it with black. Pink and black are such a great combo. We also have two best-selling pink Color Design Eyeshadows, Off the Rack and Makeover, which are easy-to-wear, shimmery versions of the shade.

Maybe if Sandy Linter and Andrew Sotomayor read this post, they can weigh in on how to wear pink eyeshadow. In the meantime, tell us what you think about pink. Would you ever? Or never?

P.S. Speaking of Amy Adams, I’m really looking forward to “Julie & Julia.” The book was a fun read, so I’m curious to see how it translates to film.

113 Things? Tell Us Your Tween Advice and Enter to Win Our Beauty Booty/Book Giveaway!!

Friday, July 17th, 2009

Today’s book giveaway? Brittany and Terri MacLeod’s “113 things to do by 13.” Terri, a senior producer at “Access Hollywood,” everyone’s favorite entertainment show, and her daughter Brittany co-wrote this magazine-style handbook for young girls. (That’s Terri & Brittany above.) It’s packed with celeb tips, colorful photos as well as advice for real girls. We especially love the excerpt with Leighton Meester’s makeup artist, Chris Colbeck. He lists Lancôme Star Bronzer and Color Design Eyeshadow among his favorite products to use on Leighton!

Erin and I flipped through the book and decided our favorite was #97 “Be Money Smart.” Boring, yes, but it’s good to learn how to save when you are young and not spend all your money on clothes, beauty products and hangbags. “And shoes,” Erin just added.

The mom-daughter duo appeared on “The Today Show” last Friday and Lancôme celebrity makeup artist Andrew Sotomayor did their makeup for the segment. Brittany and Terri also gave us the inside scoop on some of their favorite Lancôme products. Brittany can’t live without Juicy Tubes—-she “loves them all”–Aqua Fusion moisturizer, Laque Fever in Chromed Pink and Color Design Cream Blush in Freeze Frame. Terri lists Color Design Liberty Palette in Nude Elegance (new from our fall collection Declaring Indigo) and Juicy Tubes Pure (our first natural gloss) among her beauty faves.

We have five of these super-cute books to give away–plus Brittany and Terri’s favorite products. Just tell us what advice you wish someone had given you when you were 13. We’ll pick five posts at random. Please post by Tuesday night!
