World number one Rafael Nadal won his first Australian Open title after outplaying world number two Roger Federer in the men’s final on Sunday.

Nadal, the French Open, Wimbledon and Olympic champion, finally made breakthrough at the hardcourt Grand Slam at the Melbourne Park, tamed three-time winner Federer 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (3), 3-6 and 6-2.

Federer, failing again to equal Pete Sampras’ record of 14 Grand Slams, might feel he has a much better chance this time after the huge physical effort Nadal made in the epic semifinal win over compatriot Fernando Verdasco, but it just did not work in his way.

Nadal and Federer both looked nervy at the start of the first set, exchanging break twice to tie the game at 4-4. Nadal finally took the advantage of some sloppy play of the Swiss superstar to take a decisive break in the eleventh game and held serve firmly in the next before drawing the first blood at 7-5.

Both players hit top gear in the second set, exchanging break again in the fourth and fifth games. Federer, clearly looking more dangerous, pushed the Spaniard to the limits and finally converted on the fifth break point opportunity of the eighth game to extend to a comfortable 5-3 lead.

After claiming the second set at 6-3, the Swiss was gaining momentum on his side, threatening to take another break in the eleventh game of the third set, only for an undaunted Nadal to hold serve after beating three break points.

After Federer holding serve in the next game, the set was dragged into the tie-break, where Nadal won at 7-3.

The momentum was then switched to the side of Federer, who won the fourth set at 6-3. However, Federer never looked comfortable in the final set, dropping serve twice to lose at 6-2.

Rare Albert Einstein’s Real Life Photos

Was Einstein’s Brain Different?

Of course it was-people’s brains are as different as their faces. In his lifetime many wondered if there was anything especially different in Einstein’s. He insisted that on his death his brain be made available for research. When Einstein died in 1955, pathologist Thomas Harvey quickly preserved the brain and made samples and sections. He reported that he could see nothing unusual. The variations were within the range of normal human variations. There the matter rested until 1999. Inspecting samples that Harvey had carefully preserved, Sandra F. Witelson and colleagues discovered that Einstein’s brain lacked a particular small wrinkle (the parietal operculum) that most people have. Perhaps in compensation, other regions on each side were a bit enlarged-the inferior parietal lobes. These regions are known to have something to do with visual imagery and mathematical thinking. Thus Einstein was apparently better equipped than most people for a certain type of thinking. Yet others of his day were probably at least as well equipped-Henri Poincaré and David Hilbert, for example, were formidable visual and mathematical thinkers, both were on the trail of relativity, yet Einstein got far ahead of them. What he did with his brain depended on the nurturing of family and friends, a solid German and Swiss education, and his own bold personality.

A late bloomer: Even at the age of nine Einstein spoke hesitantly, and his parents feared that he was below average intelligence. Did he have a learning or personality disability (such as “Asperger’s syndrome,” a mild form of autism)? There is not enough historical evidence to say. Probably Albert was simply a thoughtful and somewhat shy child. If he had some difficulties in school, the problem was probably resistance to the authoritarian German teachers, perhaps compounded by the awkward situation of a Jewish boy in a Catholic school.

Numerous Soldier Formations During World War I(IMAGES)

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008
During World War I, photographers Arthur S. Mole and John D. Thomas traveled from one military camp to another taking photos of soldiers forming patriotic symbols as a part of planned promotional campaign to sell war bonds.

Thousands soldiers would form gigantic patriotic symbols such as Statue of Liberty, president Woodrow Wilson, American Eagle or Liberty Bell which were photographed from above.
Mole and Thomas spent days preparing formations which were photographed from a 70 to 80 foot tower with an 11 by 14 inch camera.
Photos by Mole and Thomas are now part of the Chicago Historical Society, the Museum of Modern Art and the Library of Congress.
