First of all this is great. Probably saved me $20,000 in market research. Now how does Apple Iphone and Appstore fit into this model? If you look at Appstore it seems to me that you can find software for information recorders, entertainment seekers and the communicators. It seems to me that Apple decided to create a great user experience, with a robust application platform geared towards those people who love the Internet. And then it unleashed the App Store to allow massive customization thus meeting the needs of many outside the capabilities of the initial product release. I would like your feedback on how the mobile phone market had changed from being feature centric to more OS centric with ISVs driving the customization needs. It seems that we maybe following a similar model as the PC market. Where open and multi-purpose architecture triumphed closed and single purpose devices.
I would love to get your take on it.

Moin

I support thin computers. Not only Wyse technology but Hp as well is into manufacturing these sustainable eco friendly computers. They have a centralized hard disk and are getting very popular at Call-Centers. This product is great. It conserves electricity big time.

This can be truly said as responsible technology.

I live in the united kingdom and personally I feel that in the US the mobile technology is a few years behind than Europe. (Maybe due to the different mobile network standards within the united states.) Whereas in Europe it's gsm. The majority of the mobile phones also use 3G and often these mobiles have HSDPA.

Speaking personally about my phone usage I use my phone a lot to text and call less frequently. Each month I get unlimited texts (3000 due to the fair use policy), unlimited data and 200 minutes for £20 per month.

Within the UK I believe that the 'slide' mobiles are the most popular form factor unlike clamshell (flip) mobiles. Personally I prefer the slide design.

When it comes to the make of the mobiles, Sony ericcson, nokia and samsung are the most popular with motorola unheard of these days.

My current phone is a samsung pixon, has HSDPA, 8 mega pixel camera and a 3.2inch screen. I don't think I could live without it.

Btw is the iPhone popular in the US?

Great article Micheal... you must check out this related story (and video). It sheds a bit of humor on the ongoing Nokia debacle regarding the naming of its phones:

http://smashgods.com/2009/07/01/ones-and-zeros-why-doesnt-nokia-name-its-phones/

Thanks, Anonymous.

Usually I delete comments with that sort of language (because it can eventually lead to flame wars between people posting comments). But in this case you're criticizing everyone equally, and besides I think there's a nugget of truth in what you said.

You might be surprised at how much traffic this post still gets. If you think of it as an article rather than a blog post, then it doesn't seem all that old.

Not much has changed in the 3+ years since this article was written. I just stumble upon it an thought I'd add my own two cents. Europeans are elitist assholes and Americans are self-absorbed assholes. I still hate the fricking iPhone and I wish that there were some Symbian phones available on this side of the Atlantic.

I also agree that this is a fine article, even 2 years later.
I would suggest that vendors are now punting their target audience with APPs. If they provide a simple way to develop and distribute APPs then they can state that they are in (or moving toward) the center and it is NOT dead.
My son has an iPhone and it is all entertainment. I have one (work dictated it over my Pearl) and it is a cross over leaning heavily towards communications with entertainment and some information management.
Thanks for the read.
